Details

Rebecca Oakes is just thirteen when her mother passes away, and she is left to care for her ageing father. However, it is not only family that stands in the way of Rebecca's dream. She will have to fight the Australian society - a society where it is difficult for a woman to get an education, where women can't own property, have no vote and no voice. Will she be thwarted by a man who is determined to stand in her way? Set in the early colonial days of New South Wales and based on real characters in the mid 1800s. Rebecca's Dream continues the story from Suzannah's Gold. Carol Preston is the author of Mary's Guardian and Tangled Secrets.

Reviews

Injustice Multiplied...Review by Annie
This grand historical romance brings a robust happy ending to the tragic poignancy of the Oakes family portrayed in SUZANNAH'S GOLD. As well as the warmth of romance, it also brings the sweep of family saga to a rounded story of nineteenth century Australia.

Rebecca is just a young girl when her mother Suzannah dies and she is encumbered with the care of her frail, aged father. He lives in a mental cocoon and her care for him takes up all her days, almost stifling the dream she has to get an education and become a teacher.

Her outspoken ways alienate even some members of her family as she struggles with imbedded societal injustice. This particularly comes to the fore when her sister Mary loses her husband and then, because of the colony's laws, cannot inherit his property. Turfed out with her children and also reeling from the loss of her husband, Mary is yet another burden in Rebecca's difficult life.

A turn is around the corner. Rebecca's father dies; then Mary remarries. Rebecca is finally able to pursue her dream of education in Sydney. But the dream turns to a nightmare late one night when she is raped - and then accuses the wrong man... (Posted on 1/03/2016)
