Reviews

A charming and poignant story about overcoming prejudice and holding on to life, love and hope for the future.Review by Mazzy
Breaking new ground, be it cultural, locational or relational, is fraught with challenge. Add vulnerability and danger to the mix and you have the makings of a thrilling story. The characters and situations Carol Preston explores in 'Next of Kin' provide exactly that.
From the moment I first laid eyes on the front cover with its charming front veranda and rustic seat that oozes with a visual invitation to come and linger within its pages and be taken to another time when life was rough, raw, fresh and full of promise and possibility, to the moment I reached the last page, I was drawn into the nineteenth century world of Fanny Franks and Jack and Jim Smith's east coast Australia. And I'm so glad I was. Their experiences highlight the rough rites of passage our predecessors courageously endured in their endeavours to develop Australia into the diverse and relatively tolerant multicultural society it is today.
Not only are Preston's characters believable, her heroine and her heroes are the kind of Australians we would all be proud to find in our own family trees and the antagonists (both the people and negative prevailing attitudes) remind us of how much we have overcome as a nation, and how important it is to keep up the good work begun. Regardless of how you feel about such 'big picture' things, 'Next of Kin' is a terrific story about overcoming prejudice, adversity and tribulation, all within the context of a blossoming, realistic, love story. It's a fabulous read. I highly recommend this book.
